At GunCraft we use two types of coatings

• Gunkote - This is a rust preventative coating that is identical to the Kal-Gard coating the military use. Gunkote can be touched up without removing the first layer of paint.
• Cerakote - This is a very durable rust preventative coating. Cerakote is the more expensive option. Cerakote cannot be touched up, and will need to be reapplied.

How it's done

Coating is a delicate process and cleanliness is of extreme importance.

We start by disassembling the firearm down to the smallest part because, for the coating process, each part needs to be done separately.

First, the item to be coated must be media blasted, to get rid of all dirt and rust, and to give the surface more grip for the coating to stick. At GunCraft we use Aluminum Oxide Grit as a blasting media.

Next, the item is washed and brushed to ensure there is no leftover blasting media, rust or dirt stuck on the item.

Then the item gets a long de-greasing bath.

Once the item is completely naked and free from any dust and oil, the desired coating can be applied using a fine-tuned paint spray gun.

Taking great care, the freshly painted item is placed in an oven to bake at a specific temperature and time to cure the paint.

Once cured and cooled reassembly can be done. After the firearm is assembled a functionality test is done by our experienced gunsmiths.
